An educational advocate is knowledgable about the state and federal laws and academic and educational support systems that students can receive through their Local Education Agencies (LEAs), including Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Special Education Programs, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and 504 Plans, and Discipline Protections and Procedures. The advocate works alongside the parent to educate, support, and advocate in the best interest of their child while developing a successful partnership with the school district employees.
